However, we can help it. How?<\/div>\n\r\n\r\n<div id=\"custom_quote-block_5eb3d96fe6f37\" class=\"quote\">\n  <p class=\"quote\">Even in old age, a healthy lifestyle can help us to maintain an efficient immune system and better fight infections.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\r\n\r\n<div id=\"title_text-block_5eb3d983e6f38\">\n          Before answering this question, we need to clarify a fundamental concept: all processes underlying the aging of the immune system have something in common, namely the alteration of <strong>epigenetic<\/strong> <strong>mechanisms<\/strong>, that our cells possess to maintain all the <strong>functions<\/strong> essential to their survival, but also to keep their <strong>DNA intact<\/strong>.\r\n\r\nThis is good news because <strong>epigenetic mechanisms can be influenced<\/strong> by the way we live.\r\n\r\nThere are five simple rules to follow.<\/div>\n\r\n\r\n<div id=\"title_text-block_5eb3d996e6f3a\">\n        <h3 class=\"article-title\">Rule 1: Prevent infections<\/h3>\n          The first basic rule is to prevent, as far as possible, seasonal viral infections such as influenza. This is where <strong>vaccines<\/strong> come to help. Although less effective than in the young, flu vaccines provide sufficient coverage to limit episodes even in the elderly. \u00a0It is very important to understand that every <strong>flu<\/strong> episode gives rise to <strong>inflammation<\/strong> and that as the episodes recur, the inflammation becomes chronic.\r\n\r\n<strong><em>Every flu episode gives rise to inflammation. As the episodes recur, the inflammation becomes chronic.<\/em><\/strong><\/div>\n\r\n\r\n<div id=\"title_text-block_5eb3d9a7e6f3b\">\n        <h3 class=\"article-title\">Rule 2: Be physically active<\/h3>\n          \u200dThe advice is to <strong>exercise regularly<\/strong> (at least three times a week) if possible under medical supervision or with the help of a personal trainer. There are now countless studies that demonstrate the effect of physical exercise on the <strong>immune system<\/strong>. All the data reported so far have shown that <strong>resistance training<\/strong> is the most suitable exercise after a certain age.\r\n\r\n<strong>Resistance exercise increases the number of T naive lymphocytes in circulation, the very ones that fail with age.\r\n\u200d<\/strong>\r\nControlled clinical trials show, in fact, that endurance exercise increases the number of <strong>\u201cnaive&#8221; T lymphocytes<\/strong> in the bloodstream, the very ones that fail when you get older.\r\n\u200d\r\nFast walking, cycling, swimming, all <strong>endurance aerobic sports<\/strong> are effective, regardless of the fact that their benefit goes far beyond boosting the <strong>immune system<\/strong> and affects all our functions, especially those of the <strong>brain<\/strong>.<\/div>\n\r\n\r\n<div id=\"title_text-block_5eb3d9bce6f3c\">\n        <h3 class=\"article-title\">Rule 3: Eliminate inflammation<\/h3>\n          Try to eliminate all hotspots of <strong>inflammation<\/strong> in our body. The first and most important is the gut. The set of microorganisms, bacteria and fungi that live in the intestinal tract, known as <a href=\"https:\/\/solongevity.com\/en\/news-en\/aging-well-it-relies-on-bacteria-as-well\/\">microbiome<\/a>, is responsible for regulating the inflammatory state of the intestine, and it is affected by our food and life choices in general.<\/div>\n\r\n\r\n<div id=\"title_text-block_5eb3d9cde6f3d\">\n        <h3 class=\"article-title\">Rule 4: Eat well<\/h3>\n          Following a <strong>healthy diet<\/strong>, with the <strong>correct protein intake<\/strong> and, above all, <strong>rich in vegetable fibres<\/strong> that maintain the right balance of the intestinal microbiome, is the first medicine.<\/div>\n\r\n\r\n<div id=\"title_text-block_5eb3d9dbe6f3e\">\n        <h3 class=\"article-title\">Rule 5: Food supplementation<\/h3>\n          When necessary, proper <strong>nutritional supplementation<\/strong> can be important. On the subject of supplements, important scientific knowledge is accumulating that supports the possibility of taking action on <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/solongevity.com\/en\/news-en\/aging-is-not-only-about-your-dna\/\">epigenetic aging<\/a><\/strong>. Recent research has shown that naturally extracted substances can positively regulate our epigenetic mechanisms.\r\n\r\nAn example of this is <strong>resveratrol<\/strong> and <strong>vitamin B3<\/strong>: a particular type of vitamin B3, <strong>nicotinamide riboside<\/strong>, seems to be very effective, while a study published in the journal <em>Science Signalling<\/em> has shown that resveratrol, used at certain doses, significantly increases the ability of <strong>lymphocytes<\/strong>, especially naive T lymphocytes, to activate in response to antigens and to generate a more efficient immune response.\r\n\r\nIt is therefore likely that in the near future, as research progresses, we will have new <strong>drugs<\/strong> and <strong>nutraceuticals<\/strong> that will improve the response to infections.<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The elderly are more susceptible to infections such as coronavirus SARS-CoV-2 due to phenomena such as immunosenescence and inflammation.
