These are just a few of <strong>Long Covid symptoms<\/strong>, a new syndrome that some <strong>Covid-19 patients<\/strong> (not sure what percentage) carry with them for months after their official recovery.\r\n\r\n<strong>The causes<\/strong>? Still not known exactly, but recently some scientists have put forward an interesting hypothesis: the Long Covid syndrome could be due at least in part to the premature <strong>ageing of the immune system<\/strong> (immunosenescence), a consequence of the Sars-Cov-2 infection.\r\n\r\nThe attention of physicians and health systems for this condition is growing a lot, so much so that in the United Kingdom &#8211; where it is estimated that there are currently more than one million people with major problems three months after the disappearance of positivity to the virus &#8211; the first specialized clinics for Long Covid are emerging.<\/div>\n\r\n\r\n<div id=\"title_text-block_5eb5174aa3d40\">\n        <h3 class=\"article-title\">Long Covid definition <\/h3>\n          Although we hear a lot about it now, Long Covid remains a condition that has yet to be defined. Mostly, for the time being, Long Covid is referred people who recovered from acute Sars-Cov-2 infection but experience persistent symptoms for more than 4 weeks after disease onset. Not all patients suffer from them (estimates range from 32.6% to 87.4%), but the frequency seems greater the more severe the acute illness was.\r\n\r\nLong Covid can occur in the:\r\n<ul>\r\n \t<li><strong>lungs,<\/strong> with dyspnea (air hunger), coughing, and hypoxemia;<\/li>\r\n \t<li><strong>circulatory system<\/strong>, with clot formation that can cause pulmonary embolisms and stroke;\r\nheart, from palpitations and chest pain to myocarditis and inflammation;<\/li>\r\n \t<li><strong>brain<\/strong>, from migraines to neuropsychiatric symptoms (depression, anxiety, insomnia, post-traumatic stress syndrome, obsessive compulsive disorder), to the so-called brain fog (difficulty in concentrating, memory and language problems, etc);<\/li>\r\n \t<li><strong>kidneys<\/strong>, with renal failure<\/li>\r\n \t<li><strong>nose<\/strong> and <strong>mouth<\/strong>, with loss of smell and taste<\/li>\r\n \t<li><strong>hair loss<\/strong><\/li>\r\n \t<li><strong>joints<\/strong> and <strong>muscles<\/strong>, with arthralgia and myalgia<\/li>\r\n \t<li><strong>tiredness<\/strong> (fatigue);<\/li>\r\n \t<li><strong>gastrointestinal system,<\/strong> with diarrheal, acid reflux, loss of appetite, nausea.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<img fetchpriority=\"high\" fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-3331\" src=\"https:\/\/solongevity.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/A019-2b_shutterstock_1493717207.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" \/><\/div>\n\r\n\r\n<div id=\"custom_quote-block_5eb51807a3d41\" class=\"quote\">\n  <p class=\"quote\"><strong>Although we hear a lot about it now, Long Covid remains an undefined condition.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\r\n\r\n<div id=\"title_text-block_5eb51812a3d42\">\n        <h3 class=\"article-title\">Premature aging of the immune system<\/h3>\n          As <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newscientist.com\/article\/mg25033343-000-premature-ageing-of-the-immune-system-may-be-one-cause-of-long-covid\/\">New Scientist<\/a> reports, during the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eventsforce.net\/bsi\/frontend\/reg\/thome.csp?pageID=4318&amp;eventID=7&amp;traceRedir=2\"> virtual conference of the UK Coronavirus Immunology Consortium<\/a> and the British Society for Immunology, Niharika Duggal of the University of Birmingham (UK) showed data on 46 patients aged 30 to 68 years who had been hospitalized for moderate and severe forms of Covid-19. <strong>Three months after<\/strong> discharge, the<strong> immune system<\/strong> of these people had taken on particular characteristics, <strong>typical of the over 60s<\/strong>: a decrease in &#8220;<em>naive<\/em>&#8221; immune system cells (immature cells, i.e., cells that have not yet been exposed to an antigen), compared with an accumulation of memory B and T lymphocytes and an excess of senescent T lymphocytes. A physiological change after the age of 60 years, <strong>called immune-senescence,<\/strong> which, however, can only raise questions if it occurs in young people who survived Covid-19.\r\n\r\n<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-3327 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/solongevity.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/A019-2b_shutterstock_1493717207.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1000\" height=\"702\" \/> Il sistema immunitario delle persone ricoverate per Covid-19 appare \u201cinvecchiato\u201d<\/div>\n\r\n\r\n<div id=\"custom_quote-block_60d6f0e224e92\" class=\"quote\">\n  <p class=\"quote\"><strong>the immune system of young survivors of Covid-19 appears to have aged prematurely, a fact that could contribute to the onset of Long Covids<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\r\n\r\n<div id=\"title_text-block_60d6f269ec137\">\n          <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bmh.manchester.ac.uk\/research\/domains\/infection-immunity-inflammation-repair\/immunology\/covid-19\/\">Another study<\/a> from the <strong>Manchester<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>University <\/strong>observed alterations in neutrophil white blood cells, which, even months after official recovery, remain overabundant and nonfunctional. And still <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medrxiv.org\/content\/10.1101\/2021.01.11.20248765v1.full\">research<\/a> from the <strong>Cambridge\u00a0University<\/strong>\u00a0found changes in gene expression related to aging of immune system cells in patients who survived Sars-Cov-2.\r\n\r\n<strong>Whether<\/strong> <strong>premature aging<\/strong> of the immune system is a <strong>cause<\/strong> or a <strong>consequence<\/strong> of coronavirus infection is, however, yet to be determined.
